RESUMO

This article reports three new two-photon absorption (TPA) materials that are quinolinium-carbazole derivates. They are 3-(N-methyl-4-ethylquinolinium iodide)-9-ethylcarbazole (M4), 3-(N-methyl-4-ethylquinolinium iodide)-9-ethylcarbazole (H2), and 3-(N-methyl-4-ethylquinolinium iodide)-9-ethylcarbazole (H4). Their TPA cross-sections are 491, 515, and 512 GM, respectively. Under the excitation of near-infrared light, their fluorescence emission is about 650 nm. The compounds can stain nucleic acid DNA with the same level of nuclear localization as Hoechst 33342. Under continuous irradiation with a near-infrared laser, the three new compounds showed less fluorescence decay than DAPI, and the average fluorescence decay rates were 0.016%/s, 0.020%/s, and 0.023%/s. They are expected to become new two-photon fluorescent probes of nucleic acid DNA because of their excellent performance.

RESUMO

Mucosal bile acid (BA) profile is still unestablished in diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D). The aim of this study was to explore colonic mucosal BAs and their associations with mucosal mast cell (MMC)-derived nerve growth factor (NGF) and bowel symptoms in IBS-D. Colonic mucosal biopsies from 36 IBS-D patients and 35 healthy controls (HCs) were obtained for targeted BA profiling. MMC count and the expression of NGF and tight junction proteins (TJPs) were examined. We found that colonic mucosal BA profile was altered in the IBS-D cohort. The proportion of primary BAs was significantly higher and that of secondary BAs was lower in IBS-D patients. According to the 90th percentile of total mucosal BA content of HCs, IBS-D patients were divided into BA-H (n = 7, 19.4%) and BA-L (n = 29, 80.6%) subgroups. BA-H patients showed significantly higher total mucosal BA content compared to BA-L subgroup and HCs. The mucosal content of 11 BA metabolites significantly increased in BA-H subgroup, e.g. cholic acid (CA) and taurocholic acid (TCA). Moreover, BA-H patients displayed significantly elevated MMC count and NGF expression, with decreased expression of TJPs (claudin-1, junctional adhesion molecule-A and zonula occludens-1). Correlation analyses revealed that mucosal TCA content positively correlated with MMC count, MMC-derived NGF levels, and abdominal pain while negatively correlated with TJP expression. In conclusion, IBS-D patients showed an altered BA profile in the colonic mucosa. Approximately 20% of them exhibit elevated mucosal BA content, which may be associated with MMC-derived NGF signaling and bowel symptoms.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The mucosa-associated microbiota (MAM) is not as frequently studied in diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) compared with the fecal microbiota. In this study, we examined the MAM in the terminal ileum and its correlation with bowel symptoms in IBS-D. METHODS: Mucosal biopsies of the terminal ileum from 25 patients with IBS-D and 25 healthy controls were collected for 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing. Correlation analysis was performed. RESULTS: Compared with healthy controls, the MAM in the terminal ileum showed a decreased alpha diversity in the IBS-D cohort (Chao1 and Shannon indexes, P < 0.05). And the overall MAM profile clustered separately into 2 groups (ADONIS [PERMANOVA, permutational multivariate analysis of variance], P < 0.05). At the phylum level, the relative abundance of Proteobacteria was significantly higher in the ileal MAM of patients with IBS-D while that of Firmicutes was significantly lower. At the genus level, the relative abundance of Pseudomonas was significantly higher in the IBS-D cohort, with lower Bacteroides and Ruminococcus . Moreover, 40.0% of patients with IBS-D had multiple small nodules (nodular lymphoid hyperplasia) on the mucosal surface of the terminal ileum, which indicated a low-grade inflammation. In patients with IBS-D with nodular lymphoid hyperplasia, the changes of Pseudomonas and Bacteroides were more overt. Correlation analysis revealed that the relative abundance of Pseudomonas positively correlated with abdominal pain and the severity of IBS. DISCUSSION: Patients with IBS-D showed a dysbiosis of MAM in the terminal ileum, which may be associated with bowel symptoms. Moreover, 40.0% of them displayed mucosal low-grade inflammation, with a more severe mucosal microbial disturbance.

RESUMO

Introduction: Monoecy is usually interpreted as an important evolutionary route of the plant sexual system from hermaphroditism to dioecy. This floral mechanism can effectively reduce self-interference during the reproductive process, and the services provided by pollinators may play an essential role in monoecious species; however, relevant research is still lacking. Thus, we aimed to determine whether monoecious plants could effectively avoid self-interference and promote the evolution of monoecy under the service of pollinators. Methods: Here, we successfully performed manipulation experiments to test self-compatibility, pollinator behavior, and self-interference between male and female functions in Akebia trifoliata, a typical monoecious species. Results: We demonstrated that experimental self-pollination did not yield any fruit, and supplemental pollination significantly increased fruit set and fruit weight compared to natural pollination, suggesting that this species is completely self-incompatible and experiences strong pollen limitation. Simultaneous self- and cross-pollination and self-pollination prior to cross-pollination significantly reduced reproductive fitness, but self-pollination after cross-pollination did not, indicating self-interference in this plant. Moreover, both male flower probing preference and switching modes within inflorescences by pollinators successfully reinforced self-interference and were also responsible for decreasing reproductive fitness in A. trifoliata. Discussion: In summary, pollinator-mediated self-interference significantly reduced selfing, providing potential dynamics for the maintenance and evolution of monoecy.

RESUMO

Near isogenic F2 (NIF2) population frequently developed by conventional backcross has dramatically contributed to QTL identification in plants. Developing such a NIF2 population is time-consuming. Thus, it is urgent to rapidly produce a NIF2 population for QTL cloning. Here, we proposed a rapid QTL cloning strategy by generating a Pseudo-near isogenic F2 population (Pseudo-NIF2), which segregates at the target QTL but is fixed at other QTLs for the target trait. Nineteen QTLs for GL, GW, and TGW were detected in the F2 population from the cross between Zhenshan 97 and Egy316. To verify the efficiency of Pseudo-NIF2 in QTL quick cloning, the novel moderate QTL qGL10.1 which explained 9.1% and 5.6% of grain length variation in F2 and F2:3 populations was taken as an example. An F2 plant (F2-120), which segregated at qGL10.1 but fixed at other 8 QTLs for grain length, was screened to generate a Pseudo-NIF2 population by selfing cross. In the Pseudo-NIF2 population, the segregation ratio of plants with long grains to short grains fits 3:1, indicating that one gene controlled the variation of grain length. Based on the Pseudo-NIF2 and its progeny, qGL10.1 was fine mapped to a 19.3-kb region, where a gene OsMADS56 was verified as the candidate by functional polymorphism between parental alleles. Pseudo-NIF2 strategy is a rapid way for QTL cloning, which saves 3 to 4 cropping seasons compared to the conventional way. Applying the method for cloning QTL with moderate or major effects is promising. RESUMO

One-step and two-step pathways are proposed to synthesize cytokinin in plants. The one-step pathway is mediated by LONELY GUY (LOG) proteins. However, the enzyme for the two-step pathway remains to be identified. Here, we show that quantitative trait locus GY3 may boost grain yield by more than 20% through manipulating a two-step pathway. Locus GY3 encodes a LOG protein that acts as a 5'-ribonucleotide phosphohydrolase by excessively consuming the cytokinin precursors, which contrasts with the activity of canonical LOG members as phosphoribohydrolases in a one-step pathway. The residue S41 of GY3 is crucial for the dephosphorylation of iPRMP to produce iPR. A solo-LTR insertion within the promoter of GY3 suppressed its expression and resulted in a higher content of active cytokinins in young panicles. Introgression of GY302428 increased grain yield per plot by 7.4% to 16.3% in all investigated indica backgrounds, which demonstrates the great value of GY302428 in indica rice production.

RESUMO

Background/Aims: Stigma related with antidepressants is prevalent in patients with functional dyspepsia. It affects medication compliance and efficacy. Herbal medicine acquired a deep-rooted cultural identity in relieving dyspeptic symptoms in Asians. The research was designed to compare the effectiveness of Zhizhu Kuanzhong capsules (ZZKZ) versus doxepin hydrochloride (doxepin) on alleviating stigma and medication nonadherence among patients with refractory FD (rFD). Methods: Patients with rFD from February 2021 to February 2022 were randomly allocated to receive either doxepin (n = 56) or ZZKZ (n = 57) combined with omeprazole for 4 weeks. Medication possession ratio (MPR), the disease- and medication-associated stigma were analyzed. The scales were utilized to assess dyspeptic symptoms (Leeds Dyspepsia Questionnaire) and psychological conditions (Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire and Patient Health Questionnaire). Results: The MPR values for ZZKZ were significantly higher than those for doxepin (P < 0.001). The stigma scores decreased in ZZKZ group while increased in doxepin group compared to baseline after treatment. The proportion of patients showing ZZKZ-associated stigma was significantly lower than doxepin-associated stigma (P < 0.001). The MPR values were negatively correlated with post-treatment stigma scores in both groups (P < 0.001). Dyspeptic symptoms and psychological condition were improved in both groups after treatment, with no significant difference on post-treatment Leeds Dyspepsia Questionnaire, Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire, or Patient Health Questionnaire scores between 2 groups. Conclusion: ZZKZ is superior to doxepin in alleviating stigma and medication non-adherence, with comparable efficacy in improving dyspeptic symptoms and psychological condition of patients with rFD.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Assess the feasibility of using gadobutrol-based steady-state (SS) MR angiography (MRA) to evaluate the blood supply changes of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were recruited in this prospective study from December 2021 to May 2022 in a single center. The number of superior retinacular arteries (SRAs), inferior retinacular arteries (IRAs), anterior retinacular arteries (ARAs), and overall retinacular arteries (ORAs), as well as the affected rates of SRA and IRA, were determined and compared between healthy and ONFH hips and between hips across the Association Research Circulation Osseous (ARCO) staging I-IV. RESULTS: Twenty healthy and 64 ONFH hips were evaluated in 54 participants. There were significant differences between ARCO I-IV for the number of ORAs (mean of 3.5, 2.3, 1.7, and 0.8 for ARCO I-IV, respectively; p < .001), SRAs (median of 2.5, 1, 0.5, and 0 for ARCO I-IV, respectively; p < .001), and the affected rate of SRAs (20.00%, 65.22%, 77.78%, 92.31% for ARCO I-IV, respectively, p = 0.002). There were significant differences between ONFH and healthy hips for the number of ORAs (median of 5 vs. 2; p < .001), SRAs (median of 3 vs. 1; p < .001), IRAs (median of 1 vs. 1; p < .001), ARAs (median of 0 vs. 0; p = 0.04), and also the affected rate of SRAs (5.00% vs. 67.20%, p < .001) and IRAs (30% vs. 84.4%, p < .001). CONCLUSION: Gadobutrol-enhanced SS MRA is a feasible method for evaluation of hemodynamics in ONFH. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Gadobutrol-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography can evaluate blood supply changes of ONFH and therefore helps to aid in the diagnosis and guide treatment of ONFH. KEY POINTS: • Gadobutrol-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography showed changes in the retinacular artery related to the severity of femoral osteonecrosis. • Gadobutrol-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography revealed a reduced blood supply to the ischemic necrotic femoral head compared to the healthy counterparts.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the astaxanthin-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (ASX-NLC) prepared using a high-pressure homogenization transport system for local application of astaxanthin. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to study the effect of microencapsulation on the properties of ASX-NLC. The mean size of ASX-NLC was about 108.43 ± 0.26 nm and PdI was 0.176 ± 0.002. The ASX-NLC had high encapsulation efficiency which was 95.69 ± 0.13%. Good light stability and temperature stability were shown at the ASX-NLC, indicating that the preparation process was feasible. The 2,2-diphenyl-1-pyridylohydrazinyl (DPPH) scavenging test showed that ASX-NLC could still play an antioxidant role. In vitro release studies showed that compared with an astaxanthin ethanol solution, an ASX-NLC could maintain astaxanthin release more effectively. In vitro permeation studies showed that ASX-NLC could increase astaxanthin retention in the skin. In conclusion, ASX-NLC could significantly enhance astaxanthin accumulation during dermal applications. The research results have important reference significance for local skin applications and provide a basis for the development of nanostructured lipid carriers. ASX-NLC might be suitable carriers for the local application of astaxanthin.

RESUMO

The stability of the graphite seal device is a key factor for the normal operation of aero engines. However, conventional graphite exhibits poor comprehensive performance due to its porous structure, which limits its application at high temperatures. Therefore, in this paper, phosphate was used to impregnated graphite pores, and the interaction between the friction, wear, and oxidation of phosphate-impregnated graphite against superalloy at high temperatures was studied through pin-on-disk friction tests. The results revealed that the coefficient of friction (COF) of matrix graphite fluctuated greatly, from 0.07 to 0.17, in the range of 100 °C to 500 °C, while the COF of impregnated graphite was stable, at around 0.13, from 100 °C to 500 °C. The wear rates of the two types of graphite were close from 20 °C to 300 °C, while the wear rate of the impregnated graphite was significantly lower than that of the matrix graphite at higher temperatures, from 400 °C and 500 °C. The reason was that the impregnated phosphate reacted with graphite at a high temperature, forming the inert site which helped to inhibit the oxidation and maintain the mechanical properties of the impregnated graphite at high temperatures. In addition, the impregnated graphite could maintain better integrity of the contact surface and reduce the inclusion of large hard metal oxides, thus effectively reducing the abrasive wear of the disk. Therefore, the wear depth of the superalloy disk samples with impregnated graphite was significantly lower than that of the matrix graphite. The results promote the application of phosphate-impregnated graphite under the high temperature conditions of aero engines.

RESUMO

Helicases are crucial enzymes in DNA and RNA metabolism and function by unwinding particular nucleic acid structures. However, most convenient and high-throughput helicase assays are limited to the typical duplex DNA. Herein, we developed an immunosorbent assay to monitor the Werner syndrome (WRN) helicase unwinding a wide range of DNA structures, such as a replication fork, a bubble, Holliday junction, G-quadruplex and hairpin. This assay could sensitively detect the unwinding of DNA structures with detection limits around 0.1 nM, and accurately monitor the substrate-specificity of WRN with a comparatively less time-consuming and high throughput process. Remarkably, we have established that this new assay was compatible in evaluating helicase inhibitors and revealed that the inhibitory effect was substrate-dependent, suggesting that diverse substrate structures other than duplex structures should be considered in discovering new inhibitors. Our study provided a foundational example for using this new assay as a powerful tool to study helicase functions and discover potent inhibitors.

RESUMO

Graphene nanoribbons have many extraordinary electrical properties and are the candidates for semiconductor industry. In this research, we propose a design of Coved GNRs with periodic structure ranged from 4 to 8 nm or more, of which the size is within practical feature sizes by advanced lithography tools. The carrier transport properties of Coved GNRs with the periodic coved shape are designed to break the localized electronic state and reducing electron-phonon scattering. In this way, the mobility of Coved GNRs can be enhanced by orders compared with the zigzag GNRs in same width. Moreover, in contrast to occasional zero bandgap transition of armchair and zigzag GNRs without precision control in atomic level, the Coved GNRs with periodic edge structures can exclude the zero bandgap conditions, which makes practical the mass production process. The designed Coved-GNRs is fabricated over the Germanium (110) substrate where the graphene can be prepared in the single-crystalline and single-oriented formants and the edge of GNRs is later repaired under "balanced condition growth" and we demonstrate that the propose coved structures are compatible to current fabrication facility.

RESUMO

Bursaphelenchus xylophilus is the causative agent of pine wilt disease. It has caused devastating damage to ecosystems worldwide, owing to the characteristic of being widely spread and uncontrollable. However, the current methods of control are mainly based on pesticides, which can cause irreversible damage to the ecosystem. Therefore, the search for new drug targets and the development of environmentally friendly nematicides is especially valuable. In this study, three key genes of the xenobiotic detoxification pathways were cloned from B. xylophilus, which were subsequently subjected to bioinformatic analysis. The bioassay experiment was carried out to determine the concentration of matrine required for further tests. Subsequently, enzyme activity detection and three gene expression pattern analysis were performed on matrine treated nematodes. Finally, RNA interference was conducted to verify the functions carried out by the three genes in combating matrine. The results indicated that cytochrome P450 and glutathione S-transferase of B. xylophilus were activated by matrine, which induced high expression of BxCYP33C4, BxGST1, and BxGST3. After RNA interference of three genes of B. xylophilus, the sensitivity of B. xylophilus to matrine was increased and the survival rate of nematodes was reduced to various degrees in comparison to the control group. Overall, the results fully demonstrated that BxCYP33C4, BxGST1, and BxGST3 are valuable drug targets for B. xylophilus. Furthermore, the results suggested that matrine has value for development and exploitation in the prevention and treatment of B. xylophilus.

RESUMO

The homologous recombination repair (HRR) pathway is critical for repairing double-strand breaks (DSB). Inhibition of the HRR pathway is usually considered a promising strategy for anticancer therapy. The Bloom's Syndrome Protein (BLM), a DNA helicase, is essential for promoting the HRR pathway. Previously, we discovered quinazolinone derivative 9h as a potential BLM inhibitor, which suppressed the proliferation of colorectal cancer (CRC) cell HCT116. Herein, a new series of quinazolinone derivatives with N3-substitution was designed and synthesized to improve the anticancer activity and explore the structure-activity relationship (SAR). After evaluating their BLM inhibitory activity, the SAR was discussed, leading to identifying compound 21 as a promising BLM inhibitor. 21 exhibited the potent BLM-dependent cytotoxicity against the CRC cells but weak against normal cells. Further evaluation revealed that 21 could disrupt the HRR level while inhibiting BLM located on the DSB site and trigger DNA damage in the CRC cells. This compound effectively suppressed the proliferation and invasion of CRC cells, along with cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Consequently, 21 might be a promising candidate for treating CRC, and the BLM might be a new potential therapeutic target for CRC.

RESUMO

Diabetes mellitus (DM) has grown up to be an important issue of global public health because of its high incidence rate. About 25% of DM patients can develop diabetic foot/ulcers (DF/DFU). Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is the main cause of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). DF/DFU and DKD are serious complications of DM. Therefore, early diagnosis and timely prevention and treatment of DF/DFU and DKD are essential for the progress of DM. The clinical diagnosis and staging of DKD are mostly based on the urinary albumin excretion rate (UAER) and EGFR. However, clinically, DKD patients show normoalbuminuric diabetic kidney disease (NADKD) instead of clinical proteinuria. The old NADKD concept is no longer suitable and should be updated accordingly with the redefinition of normal proteinuria by NKF/FDA. Based on the relevant guidelines of DM and CKD and combined with the current situation of clinical research, the review described NADKD from the aspects of epidemiology, pathological mechanism, clinical characteristics, biomarkers, disease diagnosis, and the relationship with DF/DFU to arouse the new understanding of NADKD in the medical profession and pay attention to it.

RESUMO

Background and objective: Long-course (LC) antidepressants for the treatment of disorders of gut-brain interaction, such as refractory functional dyspepsia (rFD), pose patients at risk of antidepressant discontinuation syndrome (ADS). Short-course (SC) therapy of rapid-acting antidepressant may reduce discontinuation syndromes while maintaining efficacy for dyspeptic symptoms. However, the evidence-based research is lacking. This study aims to determine whether SC therapy with antidepressants could decrease the risk of ADS with comparable treatment efficacy to LC therapy in rFD. Methods: This randomized clinical trial with rFD patients was conducted at a tertiary hospital in China. Participants (N = 240) were randomly allocated to receive flupentixol-melitracen (FM) plus omeprazole therapy for 2 (SC group) or 4 (LC group) weeks, respectively. Scores for Leeds Dyspepsia Questionnaire (LDQ), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 for Depression (PHQ-9) were assessed at baseline and every 2 weeks, ending at 4 weeks after treatment. ADS was assessed after drug cessation. Medication possession ratio (MPR) for FM was calculated. Results: The severity and incidence of ADS of patients in SC group were significantly lower than those in LC group (0.60 ± 0.62 vs. 1.71 ± 1.58 and 3.64 vs. 39.45%; both P < 0.0001). The MPR values for FM were significantly higher in patients of SC group than in LC group (P < 0.0001). Scores for LDQ, GAD-7 and PHQ-9 decreased in patients of both groups, and the symptom improvement in SC group was comparable to that in LC group after treatment. Conclusions: Compared to 4-week FM therapy, the 2-week FM therapy reduces the risk of ADS with non-inferior treatment efficacy in patients with rFD. RESUMO

Background: The issue of population aging in rural China is getting profound; nevertheless, its impact on food consumption has not been well evaluated. This study aims to examine the relationship between rural aging and family food consumption in rural China. Materials and methods: Using the statistical yearbook data and the nationally representative household-level data from the China Rural Fixed Observation Points, this study compares the evolution of food consumption between rural and urban residents from 1985 to 2020 and analyzes the structure of food consumption expenditure of rural residents. Next, this study further investigates the impact of aging on food consumption in rural households with ordinary least squares. Results: (1) The principal foods consumed by rural residents in 2020 are meat and meat products (36.8%), grain (24.5%), and vegetables (10.9%). (2) An increase in older adults has decreased the absolute consumption of all foods, while it increased relative consumption of meat and meat products, aquatic products, edible oil and fats, poultry, eggs, and sugar. (3) Due to differences in the structure of young adults' food consumption, older adults would increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables if they lived with younger adults. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that rural older adults may increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables by advocating intergenerational cohabitation while maintaining their intake of protein to achieve a balanced dietary structure and improve their health condition.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the clinical and procedural risk factors associated with the unplanned neurosurgical intensive care unit (NICU) readmission of patients after elective supratentorial brain tumor resection and serves as an exploratory analysis toward the development of a risk stratification tool that may be prospectively applied to this patient population. METHODS: This was a retrospective observational cohort study. The electronic medical records of patients admitted to an institutional NICU between September 2018 and November 2021 after elective supratentorial brain tumor resection were reviewed. Demographic and perioperative clinical factors were recorded. A prognostic model was derived from the data of 4892 patients recruited between September 2018 and May 2021 (development cohort). A nomogram was created to display these predictor variables and their corresponding points and risks of readmission. External validation was evaluated using a series of 1118 patients recruited between June 2021 and November 2021 (validation cohort). Finally, a decision curve analysis was performed to determine the clinical usefulness of the prognostic model. RESULTS: Of the 4892 patients in the development cohort, 220 (4.5%) had an unplanned NICU readmission. Older age, lesion type, Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) < 70 at admission, longer duration of surgery, retention of endotracheal intubation on NICU entry, and longer NICU length of stay (LOS) after surgery were independently associated with an unplanned NICU readmission. A total of 1118 patients recruited between June 2021 and November 2021 were included for external validation, and the model's discrimination remained acceptable (C-statistic = 0.744, 95% CI 0.675-0.814). The decision curve analysis for the prognostic model in the development and validation cohorts showed that at a threshold probability between 0.05 and 0.8, the prognostic model showed a positive net benefit. CONCLUSIONS: A predictive model that included age, lesion type, KPS < 70 at admission, duration of surgery, retention of endotracheal intubation on NICU entry, and NICU LOS after surgery had an acceptable ability to identify elective supratentorial brain tumor resection patients at high risk for an unplanned NICU readmission. These risk factors and this prediction model may facilitate better resource allocation in the NICU and improve patient outcomes.

RESUMO

Element doping is a universal way to improve the electronic and optical properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Here, we investigate the influence of group-ⅣA element (C, Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb) doping on the electronic and optical properties of the ZnS monolayer with a tetragonal phase by using first-principles calculations. The results indicate that the doping atoms tend to form tetrahedral structures with neighboring S atoms. In these doped models, the formation energies are all negative, indicating that the formation processes of the doped models will release energy. The formation energy is smallest for C-doped ZnS and gradually increases with the metallicity of the doping element. The doped ZnS monolayer retains a direct band gap, with this band gap changing little in other element doping cases. Moreover, intermediate states are observed that are induced by the sp3 hybridization from the doping atoms and S atoms. Such intermediate states expand the optical absorption range into the visible spectrum. Our findings provide an in-depth understanding of the electronic and optical properties of the ZnS monolayer and the associated doping structures, which is helpful for application in optoelectronic devices.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cereal crops are a major source of raw food and nutrition for humans worldwide. Inflorescence of cereal crops is their reproductive organ, which also contributes to crop productivity. The branching pattern in flowering plant species not only determines inflorescence architecture but also determines the grain yield. There are good reviews describing the grass inflorescence architecture contributing to the final grain yield. However, very few discuss the aspects of inflorescence branching. AIM OF REVIEW: This review aimed at systematically and comprehensively summarizing the latest progress in the field of conservation and divergence of genetic regulatory network that controls inflorescence branching in maize and rice, provide strategies to efficiently utilize the achievements in reproductive branching for crop yield improvement, and suggest a potential regulatory network underlying the inflorescence branching and vegetative branching system. KEY SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS OF REVIEW: Inflorescence branching is the consequence of a series of developmental events including the initiation, outgrowth, determinacy, and identity of reproductive axillary meristems, and it is controlled by a complex functional hierarchy of genetic networks. Initially, we compared the inflorescence architecture of maize and rice; then, we reviewed the genetic regulatory pathways controlling the inflorescence meristem size, bud initiation, and outgrowth, and the key transition steps that shape the inflorescence branching in maize and rice; additionally, we summarized strategies to effectively apply the recent advances in inflorescence branching for crop yield improvement. Finally, we discussed how the newly discovered hormones coordinate the regulation of inflorescence branching and yield traits. Furthermore, we discussed the possible reason behind distinct regulatory pathways for vegetative and inflorescence branching.
